Liberty is stolen and truth is perverted just a little at a time.

We all know California is on fire. Conservatives have lost the battle. And it is why many are fleeing the state in droves, oftentimes finding themselves settling down here in Tennessee.

But there is a lot to learn from California. Certainly, not so that we can emulate anything that is happening there. But it is a case study on so many facets of how Marxism creeps into society almost unnoticed until it is too late.

The latest example is the passage of AB 957. This new law in California now requires a court to take into consideration as to whether a parent affirms their child’s chosen “gender identity or gender expression” when considering cases of child custody or visitation in the family courts. In other words, if you are in a custody battle as a parent, the court may consider you a danger to the child if you refuse to call little Johnny by his new name, Susie.

Clearly, this is an egregious act of the government to superimpose this Marxist ideology on a free people and so unashamedly pervert the truth. But it also uses the government and force of law as a tool of manipulation by causing parents to capitulate to the Statist idea of what it means to be human out of fear that they may one day lose their children. And fear, as we well know, is a powerful motivator.

It is worth noting that 76% of California’s legislature voted YES for this madness. That vote in and of itself is a sign of just how far California has fallen.

But the lesson I want to hone in on is the legislature’s justification as to the prudence of such a dastardly law. In the California Assembly’s own bill analysis of AB 957, they state…

“Notwithstanding the concerns of some opponents, the bill does not mark a major change in family law policy. The courts will continue to give paramount importance to the best of interest of the child based on multiple factors; an affirmation of gender identity or gender expression will be added as one of those factors.”

The message here by the Assembly as they obliterate parental rights and redefine the fabric of humanity is that their intentions are simply being misunderstood. Things are not really as bad as they seem.

The law only requires the courts to consider gender identity, but it must also continue to consider a multitude of other factors in determining a custody battle. So, do not lose heart (they say). The court may still allow you to be a parent even though you might discriminate against your child’s chosen gender expression. See! They are not really tyrants. They are benevolent in their dictates.

This is not just the mind of a liberal. This kind of rhetoric is also reminiscent of weak leadership in some of the reddest of states, including Tennessee, where compromise and half-measures are sought in place of firmly securing liberty per our Constitution by standing on timeless principles and not giving an inch to the enemy.

This is the same kind of reasoning that comes from a Governor who calls for a special session on gun control while telling you that he does not support violating constitutional rights or due process.

This is the same kind of reasoning when legislators acknowledge your right to refuse vaccination, but only for COVID.

This is the same kind of reasoning when a Governor states that he is against the promulgation of critical race theory (CRT) in our public schools, but then hires a Commissioner of Education whose goal is to make schools “less racist.”

This is the same kind of reasoning when legislators pass a bill allowing illegals to obtain professional business licenses in Tennessee but tell you that they are fighting against illegal immigration and gripe at Biden on Twitter about the border wall.

This is the same kind of reasoning when legislators who profess to be fiscally conservative hand out tax dollars to corporations like candy in the name of job growth and support a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to own private corporations.

So, what can we learn from California? Well, the same thing we learn from watching RINOs govern right here in Tennessee. Compromise does not secure liberty, nor does it fulfill an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.

My admonition to every voter in Tennessee is the same I have towards every state legislator. You must stand firm on conservative values with absolutely no compromise, every time, all the time. There are no excuses. There is no “playing the game.” There should never be the sentiment of “give a little now” just to “get a little bit later.”

If we truly expect the hold the line here in Tennessee, then we must demand a firm adherence to our Constitution and a resolute determination to fight against anything or anyone that would seek to undermine the liberties secured therein.

That is my firm commitment. And I hope it is yours too.
