Urge your State Senator to SUPPORT SB 476 to remove foods containing Red 40 from our schools.

SB 476 prioritizes children’s health by prohibiting the sale and distribution of food and beverages containing Red 40 in public schools. Beginning August 1, 2027, local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools will be required to eliminate this artificial dye from school meals, vending machines, and other school-provided food sources, except in limited fundraising events.

Scientific research has raised serious concerns about the health effects of Red 40, particularly in young children. Studies have linked this artificial dye to hyperactivity, attention disorders, allergic reactions, and behavioral issues. Many parents and health experts have called for its removal from school environments, where children consume these products daily. Countries in Europe already require warning labels on foods containing Red 40, while some have banned it outright due to safety concerns.

By removing this harmful additive from schools, this legislation ensures that students receive healthier food options, reducing potential negative impacts on their development and well-being. Schools should be places where children thrive—not environments where they are exposed to unnecessary health risks. This measure is a proactive step toward protecting Tennessee’s students, aligning with growing public awareness about the dangers of artificial dyes in children’s diets.
