FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT. The words of an American President.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, an assassination attempt was made on the life of President Trump during a political rally in Butler, PA. In a moment that is sure to live on in the American psyche, the President stood up with blood dripping down his face, fist raised in the air, and defiantly yelled to the onlookers, “Fight. Fight. Fight.”

In moments like this, a man’s true character is tested and there is no faking it. The visceral response with adrenaline rushing through the body will most certainly yield a result that cannot be conjured up by any amount of contemplation or planning. And what we saw in that moment was a man who chose to stand up in the face of evil and put himself alongside the citizens of this great nation. He did not cower. He stood.

Just like in the winter of 1777-1778, we find ourselves in the encampment of Valley Forge. Let me take a moment to expand on that a bit.

It seems like we have lost our country. We have lost countless battles over the last few decades as the Deep State has strategically dismantled our Constitution article by article and stolen our peace and prosperity. Many of us are fully aware that we live in a banana republic.

Our borders are open and our enemies are crouched on every side. The middle class is disappearing. Our national military defenses have been greatly depleted and morale is at an all-time low. Our young people across the nation have been demoralized and now find it difficult to see hope in the future, the hope of raising a family and owning their own home, the hope of a well-paying job, and are disconnected from the rich history of faith and perseverance that once made our nation strong.

Things were not so different in 1777. The British had taken Philadelphia, the largest city in America at that time. Congress fled the city. Pennsylvania’s state government fled the city. General Washington then launches a surprise attack at Germantown in a final effort to regain the city and fails. The beaten Continental Army later retreats to Valley Forge.

The end of the Revolutionary War is still five years away from this test at Valley Forge. But it may be the biggest test the army will face. At Valley Forge, the Continental Army would lose more soldiers than in any single battle during the entire war. They will face unparalleled disease, starvation, and death. Their effort will seem futile, and the army will face a demoralization that will test the mettle of any man.

Right now, America is Valley Forge.

The primary differentiating factor between now and then maybe that in Valley Forge, the Army had a defined enemy, the Crown. They knew where to aim. That task is more difficult today as our enemies often hide in plain sight. They are the captured agencies and institutions, higher education, the media, factions of our own government, and external forces that exert sizable influence over our electoral process. Those challenges leave us begging the question, where do we aim?

It is important to understand that we are fighting a battle right now primarily on two fronts. One is spiritual. That battle is never going to go away and Christians must continue to be grounded in faith and grounded in the Word. It is the battle of the ages. And we must remain committed to it. Those strategies should inform all of our actions and how we proceed on every front.

The second battlefront is one to secure a political structure, our country, our home, the United States of America. And I believe that this nation must succeed. We must win.

Call it Christian Nationalism. Call it an unhealthy patriotism. Call it whatever you want. But I do believe that America is more than a sovereign nation. It is an idea, one birthed from the fires of revival and the kind of faith in a most Sovereign God laid out by men like Jonathan Edwards who said, “The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pleasure of God, and that of an angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood.” These are the kinds of words that were ringing in the ears of the young men of the 1700s in America. They knew that God was in control. And they trusted in one simple fact…if God was with them, they would survive. And if not, they would die. And that is still true today.

I do believe that America was founded by and only still exists today by God’s good providence. That does not mean that America is not without its troubles. This nation has had its failings. But I also believe that America has been one of the greatest exporters of God’s mercy throughout the world. God could have put you and me anywhere and in any time. But in his sovereignty, He has put us here and now. And therefore, we have a duty and obligation to fulfill in both the place He has put us and for such a time as this. And the question is not whether God will have His way. He most certainly will. But the real question is, will He use us? Will we be found faithful to the task?

You and I are in our Valley Forge moment. And as much as our surroundings may look bleak and hopeless, I know that God is not finished with America. God is the author of some pretty incredible comeback stories.

In June of 1778 after much trial and testing, General Washington led a more prepared and confident army out of Valley Forge that would later on lay siege to victory against a tyrant. 246 years later, on a Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania, a bullet would come within a whisper of taking out the most ominous threat to the Deep State’s mission to destroy the flame of liberty.

God is not done with America. And clearly, He is not done with President Trump. Fight. Fight. Fight.
